I am happy to announce that I've been involved, along with a talented group of people, in making a pilot tv episode! The show is called XGTV, and is a funny, informative variety show with hometown flavor. I'll be the in-studio co-host, along with another Toledo native, Michael Seay.
The show consists of several entertaining segments. We've got Lindsay & Doug, our crazy street reporters, a health & wellness expert, a "green" segment, and even a Toledo based rap artist who interviews talented local and national acts. Just last week Deuce interviewed Bo Bice, American Idol runner up! The show celebrates many of our tried & true home-grown heroes like the Mud Hens and Packo's, as well as introducing everyone to some new favorite places. I'll even take you to TARTA, to learn about their new hydrogen based biofuel, which is pretty exciting. You'll also get all the latest entertainment news, with our flair mixed in, of course.
We're crossing our fingers that FOX Toledo will pick up the show and find a time to air it. In the mean time, check out our ecclectic cast of characters at www.myxgtv.com. Soon, you'll even be able to view the show and lots of bonus material online as well. We can't wait to find out what you think!

So you're sitting on your sofa, eating potato chips, watching your favorite Comedy Block shows. Something suddenly occurs to you. Wait! What's going on? Nobody told me what's coming up next on Everybody Loves Raymond! And my brain waves have not been stirred by any trivia about Santa's Little Helper or Hank Hill's lawn mower! Something is very, very wrong.
Well, you're getting pretty upset, and understandably so, but not to worry. I'm still here! There's just one small problem. My talented producer who wrote, filmed, and edited my television promos has moved far away to another land called "Connecticut" to work for a little-known company....I think it's spelled E-S-P-N. Something to do with sports, I don't know. So anyway, until FOX Toledo hires another creative person to produce all my stuff, you may not see me quite as often. But in the eloquent words of the Terminator......I'll be back!
And if you're one of those people who's always wondering if there's anything fun to do in Toledo, I'm here to tell you that there is. As the "Face", I get to crash some really cool events, some of them regular weekly attractions. Like "Lunch at Levis Square" in downtown Toledo, featuring different bands to serenade you through every bite of your PB&J. And the Blues Festival last weekend was ironically a very happy place to be! This weekend brings the Monster Jam at the Toledo Speedway, so get your tickets early. I'll be there Friday & Saturday night to get everybody revved up! Check my schedule frequently; you just might find something you & your family will really enjoy.

My brain is completely fried because I just completed judging the "Toledoan of the Year" contest. There were some truly noteworthy nominees! After reading about all those good deeds and deserving people, I'm feeling like a lazy bum.
Not to say that I haven't been in high gear, because my "Face" events have been keeping me quite busy! In addition to all the fun things I've been doing, I've also been working hard on the new house. We're finally all moved in, and had an official housewarming party a couple weeks ago. The city water has been hooked up, and now we're just waiting on the Columbia Gas line to be run. I'm having cooking withdrawals because I can't use the oven right now! I have to think up really creative ways to make a meal, such as browning meat in the electric skillet, and using the burner on the gas grill outside to boil water. But alas, as I've been told by my mother, patience is a virtue....
I'm also pleased to tell you about a new website that has been launched by your good friends here at FOX Toledo, www.FACEPICS.tv. I've been on location shutterbugging and now you can check out your photo on this new fun site. You can also upload your own pictures and then entertain your family & friends. Check out all the categories: Pets, Summer Fun, Julia's Favorites, and Community Events. You just may spy a picture of your stunning self!
Don't forget to come visit me this weekend at the Delta Chicken Festival. I just recently learned it's where "Chicken is King"! As long as I don't have to dress like a chicken, act like a chicken, or catch a live chicken, I'll most likely enjoy myself thoroughly. Although I wouldn't mind eating some chicken....
See you there!

How cool is this!?! I just got to shoot a commercial with the one, the only, Weird Al Yankovic! This job never ceases to amaze me....
The "Parody Phenomenon" dropped by the station today on his promotional tour through our fine city, and graced me with his presence for a few wonderful moments. I am pleased to announce that he was extremely genuine, and seemed happy to learn that I am a true fan of his particular style of hilarity. I actually attended a concert of his here in Toledo at the Stranahan Theater a while back, and it was probably the most entertaining live show I've ever seen.
Our promo, soon to be seen on the FOX Toledo airways, features me with a normal-sized accordian, and Al with a teeny-tiny version, complete with me asking for my lesson. It's pretty funny, and a brilliant idea of my producer, Thom Ovacek. There you go, Thom, is that how you worded it? (Just kidding, Thom really is quite good at these things!) Also, Al complied and generously did a "Just you watch FOX Toledo" spot, in a way I've never tried myself. It seems to imply there might be consequences if you choose not to.....
And last, but not least, if I'm a good little Face, I may just be the one to introduce Mr. Yankovic live at the Toledo Zoo. Maybe I'll dress "White & Nerdy" style. Or perhaps I'll just wear my Amish garb. All the best, Al!!!

I have the honor of working with so many wonderful charities......the National MS Society, the American Diabetes Association, and just this weekend the Anthony Wayne Relay For Life in Whitehouse to help find a cure for cancer.
This was the seventh annual walk at Whitehouse Park, and it is a very symbolic event. The walk began promptly at six o'clock, and participants cruised around the track all night long. The significance of the event starting in the evening represents the moment at which someone is diagnosed with cancer, and the long "walk" through the darkness that the disease really is. Strolling along determinedly under the night sky is symbolic of the fight against the illness through drugs, chemotherapy and radiation. Then, as the morning light soon begins to brighten the day, those with cancer are reminded that there could be light at the end of the tunnel, thanks to donations and hard work to eventually find a cure.
It seems as though every individual is affected in some way by this disease. I, myself, have lost an amazing Grandmother and Grandfather to the devastating effects of cancer, so it was a pretty emotional event for me.
However, in addition to being an emotional evening, it was also a lot of fun! Despite everything, these people knew how to party. There was great music, lots of food, raffles, and DJ Tommy Ray even taught us all a new line dance, "The Cupid Shuffle"! I believe I have mastered it.
Carolyn Strayer, Chair of the event, did a tremendous job putting it all together. Hopefully you'll get a chance to participate next year!

Ever been snuck up on by a blonde in a blue polo shirt, loaded up with frisbees and key chains, flanked by a picture-taking posse? Well, give it some time, and maybe, just maybe, it could happen to you. Wherever there is fun, wherever giveaways are needed, wherever crowds abound, I might be there! My new assignment is "party crasher" and I'm showing up at exciting events all over town. My objective: to have my photo taken with YOU! Then you can go online & check out the sweet pic and brag to all your friends. (At least that's how I imagine it will go in my head.)
Today I "crashed" OregonFest in, well, Oregon. (Ohio, not the state of....) I brought two good friends along to take pictures of me with the Oregonians? Oregonites? ....people from Oregon. I also gave away a ton of key chains and frisbees, but sadly, not one autograph. I got awesome photos taken with "Marco" from Marco's Pizza, (the weirdest looking mascot I've ever seen), Viet Nam Veterans, Muddy & Muddonna, and lots of little tykes. Fortunately the rain held off the entire time so we were able to stay for the record setting 55 minute parade. Wow!
Last weekend I unexpectedly showed up at Toledo Botanical Garden for the Spring Plant Sale. I couldn't have asked for a more beautiful afternoon to spend in a garden amongst hundreds of varieties of vibrant flowers. Next Sunday I'll be hanging out with fellow Mud Hens fans at Fifth Third Field. I just hope no fowl balls come my way, as I'll be quite busy giving out more FOX freebies and inciting those around me to pose for pix! May the crashing continue......

This Friday evening, May 2nd, I have the pleasure of introducing an awesome band at the Rok Bar @ 128 Main Street in Toledo. Their name is "Lost October" and I hope you'll come out and hear their amazing sound! I really like these guys.
Lost October is "a marriage of modern rock sensibilities and classic rock influences with a strong emphasis on songwriting". They really have written some very cool songs! My new personal favorite, "Being There" is actually now available on i-tunes in the U.S., Great Britain, Europe & Japan. Just you click on www.lostoctobermusic.com to see the video and hear some of their other music. I feel very privileged to be able to introduce such a talented group of musicians! And I would really love it if we could fill up the bar and welcome these gentlemen all the way from New York City, the home of great original music but not so great picante sauce. You get the joke, I know you do.
Lost October was founded in late 2005 by Eric Colman and Scott Garopolo, and Jeff Kerestes. They built a studio just outside the New York metro area where they currently are working on two more albums. They traveled all the way to Toledo to see YOU! I hope you'll join me; we're going to have a lot of fun. Doors open at 9pm & the cost is only five bucks if you're over 21. Come hang out with me!

As the Face of FOX Toledo, my job description is always adapting and evolving. I'm often given an assignment at a moment's notice and expected to be brilliant and cool-headed. I'm really enjoying the challenge of it all! Lately I was given a brand new task that I'm fairly certain no other "Face" will have the privilege of completing.
Right now in our run-of-the-mill, mid-size city of Toledo, Ohio, a pretty important federal court trial is taking place. Three men have been accused of being terrorists, plotting to kill American military. Because cameras are not allowed in the courtroom, the best way to show news viewers what's going on is with drawings. Hhmmm...... who do we know at FOX Toledo that posseses artistic ability? Why, Julia, of course! That's right, I'm now the official sketch artist for the news. I've been assigned to capture the events on paper, using graphite and colored pencils, crayons, and even magic marker to get the point across.
I'm extremely grateful for this opportunity. In additon to being privy to all the interesting evidence, I'm also improving on many artistic skills. I am learning to work very quickly! (These guys will not sit still.) I'm also learning to concentrate acutely on my subject matter. And just so you know, this is nothing like what you see on tv. Everything's very calm, and there's even a bit of levity in the courtroom. The court marshalls are congenial, and the defense attorneys even let me sit in their row so that I can get a better view of the proceedings. (I had to bring binoculars with me because I'm so far away from the witness stand.)
My infamous sketches have already been airing on FOX Toledo News, as well as on Channel 13, and there are many more depictions to come. The funny thing is, I think my drawings are getting more air-time than I do!

This week's going to be one for the books. Unable to sleep, I figured I would get out of bed and tell you all about it. If I'm awake, I may as well be productive.
First of all, my mom's in the hospital. That's a long story, and it's probably the main reason my mind won't let me rest. But she's in God's hands, and I'm thankful for that.
This week I'll be doing something completely new and devastatingly interesting for FOX Toledo. As it turns out, there's a federal court trial going on in Toledo, and cameras won't be allowed in the courtroom. If you've been reading my blog, you are aware that I'm an artist. My employer has decided to send me in to draw the events as they transpire! Along with being a little apprehensive because I've never done anything like this before, I'm also pretty excited. I've had grand jury duty before and I found it to be a very cool experience.
In other artistic news, Karl Rundgren & I have been working on a painting for the American Diabetes Association's Celebrity Art Auction Gala coming up in a few weeks. They typically pair up an artist with a celebrity, and I guess I'm a little bit of both. Karl did a great job, and although he's no Picasso, he did paint a very nice looking sky for our window scene. I'll be turning over the painting this Thursday at a ADA dinner, and then some lucky bidder can walk away with it on April 26th at the Gala. Hopefully it'll go for more than twenty-five bucks!
My weekend gets even busier. Saturday morning I'll be at the grand opening of General's Ice Cream Shop in Whitehouse, from 11 to noon. I'd stay longer, but my family is having a big party that day. It's called a "Pisces Party", and it was actually supposed to be held on my birthday back in March, but got cancelled due to one of our millions of stupid snow storms. Can you tell I'm sick of the snow? .....Then Sunday begins with the MS Walk at the University of Toledo. I'm really looking forward to it and I hope the weather decides to cooperate! After that, with little time to spare, I'm off to Sylvania Veterinary Clinic's Adopt-a-thon for the whole afternoon. Please come out to visit me and give an adorable puppy a good home!
I'm really excited about my "diverse" week! I just hope my mom is able to get out of the hospital so she can attend the big party. My parents are my best friends and give me so much support. I love you, Mom:)

I admit it. I love shoes. I guess I don't just love them; I covet them, I dream about them, I even started working a third job to pay for them.
No, seriously, I did. Well, okay, maybe it's not just to pay for shoes, it's also to pay for all the renovations we're doing on our new house. Yes, I have become a Tastefully Simple consultant to try to make some extra money. Apparently two jobs weren't enough, but gas prices alone could necessitate a third income!
Anyway, the reason I'm telling you about this is because of a recent shoe disaster. I had purchased a lovely pair of leopard-print high heels at my new favorite shoe store, Glamourous Shoes (Holland-Sylvania Rd. near Wal-Mart). These shoes were the talk of the town, let me tell you. But I came home one night to find them mutilated. Well, not both of them, just one. So technically I could still wear the other one, but I digress. Let's just say Chloe was not my beloved dog that night. I think it might have been her way of making a political statement.....maybe she thought they were made out of REAL leopard and her sense of morality was offended. At any rate, I was out my favorite pair of shoes.
I revisited Glamourous Shoes, only to find that they had no more in my size. So I did the next best thing. I purchased a gorgeous pair of leopard-print boots! And I threw in a purse, for good measure. After all, Chloe assured me she'd pay me back. She had to take a job as a seeing-eye dog until the debt is forgiven. Ha ha.

My last two weekends as the Face of FOX Toledo have been busy, busy, busy. Also very rewarding, and tons of fun!
On Saturday, February 16th, classic rock bands, accoustic artists, Christian rockers, and bluegrass groups were "Rockin' for a Cure" at the 5th Annual MS Jam. The event took place at the Erie Street Market, a great venue for the nine hours of music. I was thrilled to be the MC for the entire event, introducing talented groups of musicians, along with Tricia Courtney and founders of the event, Bill and Kathy Gross. It was such an amazing experience, and I learned that in just the past four years, over $60,000 has been raised for the local chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. We were making a difference and having a blast at the same time! I was absolutely honored to have a place in this meaningful fundraising event. I'll be attending several more MS events this spring, such as the MS Walk, and of course, its staple fundraiser, the Bike To The Bay.
My talking talents are being challenged weekly, as yesterday I joined the rest of the FOX Toledo family at the We Care Telethon in Monroe County. This telethon was developed by St. Michael's, a non-denominational foundation that helps critically ill children and adults with health care. You have no idea what wonderful things this fundraiser does! There was a woman in attendance yesterday who has lived through three brain tumors and is now alive and well because of the outstanding care that St. Michael's has given her. The president of Monroe County Community College, our own weather genius Mike Morrisson and I were all reporting from the "phone room", announcing the pledges that were steadily coming in. We were also responsible to come up with witty banter for up to twenty minutes at a time. I was shocked to learn just how much I can talk when the situation demands it! It was truly a wonderful experience and the time sped by.
Two weeks, two important causes, two very tired Julias. But I'm ready for any fundraiser you can throw at me, so bring 'em on!

Dogs rule, cats drool!
Okay, before you jump to conclusions, I have one of each. I just happen to prefer dogs. Chloe is a beautiful mutt: a combination of sheltie, maybe sheepdog, and possibly other things. She's amazing. Noir is a very cool black cat who actually left for a whole month and then returned! We make the dog fight the cat by yelling, "Get that kitty!" It's not as bad as it sounds, the cat's pretty tough. And it does make for some good entertainment!
Last Sunday I was fortunate enough to be asked to appear at Sylvania Veterinary Clinic's Adopt-a-thon. It was a blast! I got to hang around some very cool dogs and give out some Fox Toledo freebies. Roscoe was my ultimate favorite, an adorable pup who melted my heart. He's pretty hyper, but I think he just needs a good home. He actually didn't even get adopted! Another special puppy who didn't find a home was a beautiful little cocker spaniel named Noelle. (I have a soft spot in my heart for cockers, because I had one when I was little.) If you're in the mood to take home a new additon to your family, there are lots of dogs still available. Just contact Sylvania Vet, and I'll also let you know when their next Adopt-a-thon is coming up.
If you don't have anything to do this Saturday, be sure to come see me at the MS Jam at the Erie Street Market! It's going to be so much fun: nine hours of live music, six different bands, and it all benefits a very good cause. I'll be introducing the bands and mingling with the crowd. Hope to see you there! (It begins at 2:00pm and tickets cost $25.)
And since it is Valentine's Week, I'd like to tell you how much I LOVE my job as the Face of Fox Toledo. I am so grateful to be representing my beloved hometown, and I'm having lots of fun, too! From appearing at different events to shooting my weekly promos, I'm having the time of my life. Just thought I'd let you know:) Happy Valentine's Day!

Okay, it's winter. Apparently my job has been hibernating, because there hasn't been much going on in the way of events. So I thought I'd dedicate this particular blog to short scatterbrained thoughts.
I'm still an avid fan of American Idol, of course. The more I watch, the more I am convinced that I wouldn't make it very far on this show. But that's okay, because I'm mildly famous here in Toledo! Good enough.
I love House too. I'm very excited about the new season finally starting. And where the heck is "24"? I guess they've been waiting for Keifer to get out of jail. Dude, just quit drinking already.
Have you seen The Moment of Truth, after American Idol? That show is creepy. I can't pull myself away, though! I definitely don't think it's a good idea to go on the show, because you could potentially damage your marriage, or your job, or your friendships.......
Speaking of marriage, I just got back from my honeymoon a couple weeks ago! We went to Orlando, and the weather actually cooperated. Universal Studios was very fun, and I got lots of pictures taken in front of the soon-to-open Simpson's ride. Take a look at the newly uploaded photo album! It features me with many of the beloved Simpson's characters. Wet 'n Wild was also a blast, even though I think we were the only non-teenagers in the entire place.
Wow, is it cold. Did I mention how cold it is? I'm getting really sick of this weather. It's like 7 degrees right now. Where are you, Spring?!!!
Hey, if you're reading this right now, you could help me out. Every week the Comedy Block begins with Viewer Mail Monday. That means I need questions from YOU to answer on the air! Come on! Think of something creative to ask me and your question just might end up on television.
Even though my schedule been a little lacking of late, I do have some fun events coming up in February. If you like dogs or cats, come on out and adopt one at Sylvania Veterinary Clinic's Adopt-a-thon on Sunday, Feb. 10th from 1-4. I'll be there hanging out with those furballs, so come see me! Then on Saturday the 16th, I'll be emceeing the MS Jam. Should be lots of fun! Coming up after that is the We Care Telethon on Saturday, the 23rd. I have to try to not mess up on live television!!! Wish me luck:)
Okay, I guess I'm done with my random thoughts for now. Don't forget, send me some questions!

I have to admit, I'm one of those people who gets pretty excited when the new season of American Idol rolls around each year. But I'm a little ashamed to say why the first episodes are always my favorite. Let's just say I'm not exactly watching to hear the people who have been blessed with beautiful voices.
Don't get me wrong, it's fun to watch a vocally gifted individual blow Simon away, but my secret indulgence is in gawking at those who, well,....suck. Bad. Yes, I admit my most human of flaws, watching the train wreck that are the contestants who have absolutely no clue of the incredible lack of talent they possess.
Who told these people they can sing? Is some family member or friend laughing himself silly after recommending an audition for American Idol? I'm all for positive affirmation, but I think someone has given these poor kids false hope. Take me, for instance. I like to sing; I've dabbled in the art of Karaoke quite often, and I always loved it when people told me I sounded just like the Little Mermaid. However, I am under no false assumptions that I would ever make it through even the first round of this hit show. I mean, just look at the people who win! Their voices are incredible!
I'm looking forward to continuing with my viewing, although I pretty much already know what to expect. More good, mostly bad, mean Simon, possibly drunk but sickeningly sweet Paula, a little "pitchy" for Randy, and the inevitable machine that is Ryan Seacrest. (Does he ever sleep?) And that about sums it up:-)

You may or may not be aware of how I spend my time when I'm not on Face of FOX Toledo duty. Well, the truth is, I'm a superhero. They call me the "Paint Crusader" and I bring beauty to the ugly and dilapidated, leaping from suburb to suburb in a single bound.
Okay, while I'm clearly not a superhero, I am an artist who paints murals and faux finishes in and around the area. I've been doing this for quite a while, and next to being the Face, it's the coolest job ever!
However, these past few months have been frustrating, because the hosting company for my website simply ceased to exist one night, leaving me without the most effective way to show my work. I then tried to solve this problem by having a so-called "friend" get everything back up and running, because I'm just one step up from being completely "computer illiterate". I think my "friend" ceased to exist himself, because I couldn't find him via phone calls or e-mail. I literally wanted to scream.
So, after spending several hours on the phone with a new hosting company, I was able to learn how to create my own site! I am extremely proud of this achievement, especially since I'm a complete moron when it comes to cyber matters. I'm still working on it, and it's just a template design with uploaded photos, but for me it's been quite an endeavor. If you'd like to see some of my work, you can check it out. It's muralsbyjulia.com, and I can't wait to hear what you think!
